11 Aug STPAO Featured by WDSU on Property Tax Assessment Review Period (Sula Kim interview)
Property owners in St. Tammany Parish have an important opportunity each year to review their property assessments, and WDSU recently highlighted the process in a report titled “Could You Save on Your Property Taxes? Review Period Now Open.”
The report calls attention to the importance of checking property assessments during the annual public inspection period. For homeowners and property owners, reviewing an assessment can help ensure that the information used to determine property taxes is accurate and up to date.
The St. Tammany Parish Assessor’s Office encourages property owners to review their assessment information each year rather than waiting until property tax bills arrive. During the public inspection period, property owners can verify information including their property value, mailing address, ownership information, and applicable exemptions.
For the 2026 tax year, the official Public Exposure/Review Period is August 17 through August 31, 2026. Property owners who believe their assessment does not accurately reflect their property may submit an Assessment Review to the St. Tammany Parish Assessor’s Office. The deadline for submitting a 2026 Assessment Review is August 31, 2026.
Why Reviewing Your Assessment Matters
A property’s assessed value can change for a variety of reasons, including changes in the real estate market, improvements to the property, or physical damage. The Assessor’s Office determines property values, while the applicable taxing authorities establish millage rates.
Property owners who believe their assessment is incorrect are encouraged to provide supporting information when requesting a review. Depending on the circumstances, documentation may include a recent appraisal, insurance information, photographs, repair estimates, or other information demonstrating conditions that could affect the property’s value.
The Assessor’s Office emphasizes that the review period is the appropriate time to address concerns about an assessment. Waiting until property tax bills are issued later in the year can mean that the deadline to formally challenge the assessment has already passed.
Helping St. Tammany Property Owners Understand the Process
The St. Tammany Parish Assessor’s Office provides online resources that allow property owners to check their assessments, review tax details, access forms, and learn more about the assessment and appeal process. The office also maintains resources covering topics such as homestead exemptions, senior exemptions, veterans’ benefits, property assessments, and property tax information.
The WDSU coverage helps bring attention to an important annual deadline and reminds property owners that taking a few minutes to review their assessment can be an important step in understanding their property taxes.
Property owners can visit STPAO.org to check their assessment and learn more about the Assessment Review process. The Assessor’s Office has locations in both Covington and Slidell and is available to assist St. Tammany Parish property owners with questions about their assessments.
